Berlin & Prague Celebrate Fall of Communism

2014 is the 25th anniversary of the end of communism in Central Europe. Cities across the region are marking the occasion with both onetime events and longer exhibitions. While Budapest and Warsaw commemorated their anniversaries in June, Berlin and Prague still have some celebrating to do.

Berlin

November 9, 2014 will mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Some related events to check out now and in the coming months:

  • Berliner Philharmoniker: Concert to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. November 6 & 9, 2014.11_LICHTGRENZE_Engelbecken__c__Kulturprojekte_Berlin_WHITEvoid_Christopher_Bauder__Foto_Daniel_Bueche
  • Light Installation: Twelve kilometers of illuminated balloons will stretch along a former part of the Wall; down Bernauer Straße past the Berlin Wall Memorial, then to the river Spree near the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz, Checkpoint Charlie and finally to Kreuzberg and along the Spree to the Oberbaumbrücke. A human chain along the route is also planned. November 8-9.
  • City Circle Purple Tour 25 Years Fall of the Berlin Wall: A hop on/hop off bus tour through the inner city following the Wall’s route. Descriptions via headphone.Through the end of 2014
  • Panorama of a Devided City: At Checkpoint Charlie (Friedrich/Zimmerstraße), Yadegar Asisi’s panorama portrays an artistically compacted view of life during the Cold War using a fictitious day in the 1980s set against the backdrop of the Berlin Wall. Through March 31, 2015

Prague

November 17, 2014 will mark the 25th anniversary of the start of the Velvet Revolution. A peaceful student march was broken up by riot police. News of the incident sparked anger in the general public who turned out in force to protest. On November 28, the Communist Party announced it would step down leading to free elections in December.Narodni pamatnik na Vitkove

  • Music and Politics: Music as an instrument of political power and protest is shown through artefacts, audio and visual recordings. Examples date from the Revolution of 1848 through to music in the current political landscape. The exhibition is housed in the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill which is also home to a permanent exhibition on the history of Czechoslovakia, from the founding of the Republic in 1918 to the fall of communism in 1989.   • German Autumn 1989: The Memorial will also hold a short term exhibition on the mass exodus of East German nationals who tried to get to West Germany through Czechoslovakia in the late summer/early autumn of 1989. October 3-November 2, 2014
  • The Velvet Carnival exists to bring attention to social and civic issues. On November 17th, there will be a masked parade accompanied by live music through the city center to bring people’s attention to a variety of issues facing the country and the world. Time and exact location to be announced.
