A unique mix of East and West, Nordic and East European, medieval roots and a high-tech future.

Wandering through Tallinn's medieval Old Town, you might feel like you've lost a few centuries. Northern Europe's oldest capital, Tallinn never fails to amaze, with its cobblestone streets, church spires, and beguiling vibrancy. But don't think there's nothing new or modern to see in Tallinn. Two decades ago, Estonia regained independence following the Singing Revolution of the late 80s/early 90s. Since then the city has modernized without losing its historical charm. Located just 50 miles and two hours by ferry from Helsinki, Tallinn, like all of Estonia, is a unique mix of East and West, medieval architecture and high-tech lifestyles. You'll see this effect in Tallinn's art, architecture and even the hearty and delicious local cuisine.

Route for Tallinn tour

The city's UNESCO World Heritage listed medieval walls contrast perfectly with the Old Town's chic boutiques, courtyard cafes, art-deco patisseries, and elegant bistros. The pleasant summer climate and long days encourage strolls and lingering cafe visits. And did we mention the beach? Tallinn has a two-kilometer sand beach bordering its bay. Be sure to explore outside Tallinn's city walls too. There is a peaceful park along the ramparts. Going past the railway station will put you in the Bohemian Kalamaja neighborhood. Need a reminder of this century? Tallinn is widely recognized as one of the world's most tech-orientated cities, and has the skyscrapers to match.

What I love about Tallinn

Bettina

Operations Executive

Tallinn is such an undiscovered, awesome city, and my favorite of the Baltic capitals. All the buildings in the Old Town are fantastically preserved. I zigzagged on the streets for hours just trying to take everything in. My other favorite part was the famous Kalamaja district, with all the hipster bars and restaurants. Tallinn is a place where I immediately felt comfortable and would return without any hesitation.

Things to do in Tallinn

With its rich history and an enviable location on the Baltic coast there's plenty to see in and around Tallinn. At a minimum we recommend taking a walking tour of the Old Town to both get your bearings and learn of the city's past, but 20th century history buffs will want to learn more about the Soviet era and our Communist Tallinn private tour gives you the chance to do just that. Nature lovers should head for Laheema National Park, a nature reserve with its long coast, villages, and surreal bogs traversed by boardwalks and with snow-shoe-like attachments. When we send you your customized itinerary you will be able to choose additional excursions to include in your vacation package or consider for adding later.
