Bucovina, with its beautiful painted monasteries, is the most popular tourist destination in Romania, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's easy to see why. There are 12 monasteries painted with colorful religious images and they are unlike anything else in the country. This is a quaint and quiet place with plenty of green space and easy access to the surrounding hills, which makes it a perfect destination for those who like to hike and bike.
Bucovina can definitely feel off-the-beaten-path, but in a good way. You'll love exploring the unique houses and the ancient streets as well as the gorgeous natural scenery. There are also numerous local artisans here, including pottery workshops where you can get hands-on with this traditional craft. Several interesting day trips are also possible from Bucovina, so you'll have no shortage of activities. This is a wonderful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of Romania's larger cities to get back to nature and the country's true culture.

Where to stay in Bucovina
When researching the region we found that the best accommodations were in the town of Gura Humorului so this is where you would be staying, a small picturesque town close to Sucuvea.
Things to do in Bucovina
The painted monasteries of Bucovina are the obvious draw but there's much more to see in the area and Bucovina's a great base for a day trip to Chernivtsi over the border in Ukraine, but still in the historic region of Bucovina and compared to both Vienna and Jerusalem. There's significant Jewish heritage to be explored in the area too. You can also use Bucovina as a starting point for a two or three day trip to Romania's ultra-traditional Maramures region, finishing up in Transylvania.
